How to Prep Interior Walls Before Painting

Preparation starts by deciding what not to disturb
Before washing, scraping, or sanding, inspect the wall for active leaks, dampness, mold growth, crumbling material, and unknown old coatings. Paint will not correct a moisture source or stabilize a failing substrate.
In the United States, homes built before 1978 are more likely to contain lead-based paint. Sanding, cutting, and scraping painted surfaces can create hazardous dust. Current federal consumer guidance for renovation and painting says federal law requires EPA-certified firms for covered paid renovation work in pre-1978 housing and recommends lead-safe practices; state and local requirements may add rules. Resolve that risk before creating dust.
Suspected asbestos-containing texture or other hazardous material also belongs with qualified assessment, not a cheerful DIY sanding block.
Clear and protect the room
Move small furniture out. Shift remaining pieces away from walls and cover them. Protect floors with secured drop cloths suitable for the surface; slippery plastic underfoot creates its own project.
Turn off power at the appropriate breaker before removing switch and outlet cover plates, and verify the circuit is de-energized with a suitable tester. Do not remove devices or work on wiring unless qualified. Label hardware in small bags.
Remove curtains, wall-mounted items, loose hooks, and adhesive residue using a method compatible with the wall. Mask fixtures that cannot be removed. Maintain ventilation according to every cleaner, patch, primer, and paint label.
Clean from mild to stronger
Vacuum loose dust with a suitable brush attachment, or wipe it with a clean damp cloth if the coating tolerates moisture. Wash greasy or frequently touched areas using a product approved for the surface. Follow its dilution, protective equipment, dwell time, and rinse instructions.
Work from cleaner areas toward dirtier ones and change water or cloths before they redistribute grime. Kitchens may have cooking residue; bathrooms may have soap film or moisture problems. If growth returns, address the moisture source and obtain professional guidance rather than sealing it under paint.
Let the wall dry fully. Painting damp drywall is not efficiency; it is scheduling the next defect.
Test adhesion and remove only unsound material
Check for peeling, blistering, chalking, or poorly bonded layers. Determine the cause before repair. Active moisture, incompatible old coatings, contaminated surfaces, or structural movement will continue beneath a new finish.
Where the coating is confirmed safe to disturb, remove only loose material using appropriate tools and dust control. Feather sound edges gently. Wear the protective equipment required for the task and product. Do not dry-sand unknown old paint.
For glossy but sound coatings, use the deglossing or abrasion method specified by the new coating system. Clean away residue afterward. A shiny wall may need dulling, but it does not need to be excavated to a previous decade.
Patch in thin, compatible layers
Use patching material intended for the wall and defect size. Fill small nail holes and shallow dents in thin applications, allowing each to dry as directed. Wider cracks, recurring cracks, bulges, soft drywall, or moving joints may signal a problem beyond cosmetic filler.
Once dry, sand confirmed-safe repairs until flush with the surrounding wall. Use raking light—light held nearly parallel to the surface—to reveal ridges and hollows. Remove dust with a method approved for the patch and coating system.
Match existing texture before priming. Paint changes color and sheen; it does not erase the relief map around a repair.
Caulk stationary gaps, not moving cracks
Apply paintable caulk only where appropriate, such as small stationary joints between trim and wall. Clean the joint, cut the nozzle conservatively, tool the bead, and respect cure time. Do not caulk over moisture, structural movement, failing sealant, or gaps that require a different repair.
Check compatibility with the primer and finish. Some sealants are not paintable, and “white” is not a technical specification.
Prime the problem you actually have
Spot-prime bare joint compound and porous patches to reduce flashing—visible sheen variation through the finish. Stains, tannins, glossy surfaces, major color changes, or unusual substrates may need a problem-specific primer. Use the primer recommended for both the substrate and finish, and follow dry and recoat times.
After primer dries, inspect again under raking light. Correct remaining ridges or pinholes, then reprime repaired spots as required.
Vacuum the room, remove dust from horizontal surfaces, and keep the work area protected. Preparation is finished when the wall is clean, dry, sound, and dull enough for the chosen coating.
